les fleurs du mal (flowers for Marl), Marl, 2014
Directly at the Skulpturenmuseum Glaskasten Marl, between the Grimme Institute, City Lake, and the employment agency is Marl city hall, which serves a population of 85,000 inhabitants in the north Ruhr region. White illuminated lettering on the upper edge of the façade of the building formed a wordplay of the first part of the title “les fleurs du mal” and referenced the eponymous volume of poetry by Charles Baudelaire from 1857. The dominant illuminated letters were complemented by a large vase positioned at left next to the stairway, which was formally coordinated to the concrete architecture of the 1960s-era building. The two-part installation was understood as a catalyst and an invitation to the citizens of Marl to provide fresh flowers to personally activate and shape the administrative center of the city through participation, interaction, reflection, and discussion.
