Intervento, Venice, 2009

The two-part light installation was realized on the occasion of the exhibition project “détournement 2009” as an “evento collaterale” for the 53rd Venice Biennale on the façade and inner courtyard of the Caserma Cornoldi. This military facility and archaeological site, in which the remains of a monastery from the 14th/15th century were discovered, stands between the Plaza San Marco and the Arsenale. Used as a military base by French occupiers in 1807, the Italian government eventually set up the administration for the international peace missions, which are called “intervento” in Italian. On the stringently rhythmic façade of the building as well as on the site of the excavation in the inner courtyard, which was made temporarily open to the public, the light projections shifted from vertical lines to slender letters. They formed the word INTERVENTO and anchored the artistic intervention itself as a cinematographic presence in the multilayered history of the place. (JO)
