agora/arena
While the typical function of an “arena” as a venue with a grandstand also characterizes the Bochum Jahrhunderthalle, the features of an “agora” were newly attributed to it for the Ruhrtriennale. In the style of the central urban meeting place in ancient Greece, the modern glazed porch of the former industrial hall and the forecourt with a spectator stand joined an illuminated forum that invited visitors to linger and exchange with one another. As a major component of a visit to this event, the entrance and exit of the cultural establishment took on a new quality that went beyond mere reception. At the same time the cultural and historical significance of the cooling towers and water towers was highlighted, while in the darkness they measured the area as pulsing white luminaries and projection screens. The cultural experience was thus widened spatially, temporally, and in historical significance. (JO)
